A Poet’s Wife in Stalin’s Purge: Shukriya

Shukriya Khanum Akhundzade’s life is a story of love, loss, and unbreakable strength. As the wife of poet Ahmad Javad, she faced exile and imprisonment during the 1937 Stalinist repressions, refusing to renounce her husband even under immense pressure. She survived eight years in a labor camp using remarkable courage and ingenuity. After her release, her dignity was restored along with her husband’s legacy. Her journey stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and loyalty.
